Sophia Buddenhagen is a Houston-based artist and graduate of the University of Houston, where she earned her BFA. Her vibrant, playful paintings are full of energy and joy, blending bold colors, patterns, and layered imagery to create abstract works that evoke movement and life. Inspired by extensive travels and a deep love of nature, skateboarding, and surfing, Sophia’s art reflects the beauty and diversity of the world around her. Having lived in Egypt, West Africa, Europe, and the West Indies, her nomadic upbringing shaped a perspective that transcends any single culture or location. Each piece becomes a visual journey, informed by global experiences and infused with a sense of exploration. Sophia’s process is rooted in experimentation with mixed media, including acrylics, watercolors, ink, spray paint, and oil paint sticks. Through layering, she builds texture and depth, allowing each work to unfold organically. Her goal is to inspire creativity, spark emotion, and encourage viewers to reflect on their own journeys while fostering a deeper connection to the world and the people within it. Beyond the studio, Sophia is dedicated to giving back through her work with at-risk teens, using art as a tool for expression, healing, and empowerment. Her professional career also includes art licensing, with her work featured in major global retailers such as IKEA, Ashley Furniture, I.O. Metro, At Home, and Living Spaces, among others.
